I am Malala

The story of the girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban.

Book cover

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Short Knife

The Short Knife is a historical novel set at the beginning of the Dark Ages, after the Romans have left Britain to its fate, which means marauding Saxon tribes. It charts the progress of two ‘British’ speaking sisters – the language which will develop into Welsh – who get separated, one ending up as a slave in an invading tribe, who has to learn the saxon language to survive. Chance brings them together at the end, in a surprising – but violent – situation.

The house on Mango street

The House on Mango Street is Sandra Cisneros’s greatly admired novel of a Latina girl growing up in Chicago. It tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn’t want to belong — not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza’s story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become.
